Can you give us a little background about how Morey Inc. began?
The Morey Family has been instrumental in creating the aquatic community, as we know it today. From holding the 1st professional surf contest in 1965, to the invention of the world renowned Morey Boogie Board in 1971. (Side note: We no longer have any affiliation with the boogie board brand)
Morey Inc.’s The Morey Challenge was founded in June of 2013 and is the brainchild of Sol Morey and Pat Mulligan and later joined by Alton Franco in 2014. We noticed a global trend in what is being called “experiential entertainment,” which is a newer type of venue that has quickly become popular and mainstream over the past 2-3 years. Most of these newer types of events are all land based short marathon type obstacle courses (10 miles or less) where the average person may or may not want to compete because of its extreme nature. So we came up with the idea of The Morey Challenge because of the noticeable lack of community, outdoor events/activities that where not extreme in nature and available to all ages and abilities. We also took a chapter out of Tom Morey’s (Sol’s dad and inventor of the morey boogie board) book, and that chapter had to do with keeping things simple, fun and something everyone could do or at least try.
Thus the The Morey Challenge (TMC) was born, TMC differs from these other types of experiential entertainment with a unique approach using aquatic and shoreline access (pools, oceans, lakes, rivers, lagoons, etc.) with new inflatable technologies. When put together we create an agility game/obstacle course like none other for all to try. (Think the TV show Wipeout meets Great American Race, but on a smaller scale, on the shoreline, land and in water).
Why do you think it’s important to support local organizations like Imua Family Services?
We at Morey Inc. are all about community! From the families to the businesses around us and local organizations like Imua Family services. IFS provides much needed support to the local community especially the youth when it comes to individuals with disabilities. Any organization that creates resources that families and/or business can use to help improve that families or individual’s lifestyle is a positive thing. With out those resources some families would have a hard time making ends meet, coping with that certain situation or just not getting the correct or needed info to create the best lifestyle possible for that family or individual. All of these types of items cost time and money and organizations like IFS need the support from individuals/businesses like us to make ends meet so that the support and resources are available to those that need it.
What can the public do to help?
The public can help in 2 ways:
1) By supporting and attending our events. These events will be supporting IFS as a % of proceeds will go back to IFS.
2) By volunteering for certain duties at our events. Duties can be anything from traffic control, station/course monitors, and safety/1st aide to games/obstacle building to setup and clean up. We welcome the help! Visit us at www.moreyinc.com/volunteers to learn more.
What can we expect from the Morey challenges in the future?
We are always learning and growing after each event we do. We want to make sure we keep our events challenging but FUN for all and never stagnant. We will continue to improve our events by adding more educational and cultural aspects along with new games and obstacles. We are always looking for input from the community on what they might want to see at our events. We are currently developing our Adventure series, which will be themed events as we move into the Halloween and Holiday seasons for 2014 and beyond.
